“Surviving Curtis Hall: The Lure of Blood” by L. A. Matthies is the story of a group of teenage friends who find themselves wrapped up in a dangerous adventure that could claim their lives.  Underneath the massive Curtis Hall campus, there are miles of tunnels and an abandoned mine.  In these tunnels, something lurks, something dark and evil that might cost some people their lives.

When Tristen McCoy and his friend Billy Morrow enrolled into Curtis Hall, they never expected to be involved in a life-threatening adventure.  After a student suddenly went missing, Tristen and his friends joined the rescue party.  But the rescue mission turned out to more than they bargained for.  Will Tristen and his friends survive?

The book revolved around teenage relationships with a healthy dose of the paranormal (vampires!) and lacrosse.  The writing style left a little to be desired.  A given chapter was written from one character’s point of view and then the next chapter focused on a different character while leaping around in chronological order.  Things seemed to skip a lot at times and the flow of the dialogue was choppy.  The physical description of the grand school painted an appropriate setting for the theme of the book.  While the plot and the writing were weak, the characters and the scenery were engaging.

I would recommend “Surviving Curtis Hall: The Lure of Blood” by L. A. Matthies to people who like lacrosse and paranormal adventures.  This was the author’s first book.  Although it was not terribly gory, this book would be best suited for teens.
