“Summer Sleep-Away” by Ofer Aronskind is about 12-year-old Mattie’s first summer at a sleep-away camp. As soon as school was over, he was packed and ready to go to Camp Kineret. He did not know anyone but Jonny Krasner who, in the best case scenario, would pretend to not know Mattie so as to not ruin his cool. (The worst case scenario would be very physically painful!)
Once at camp, Mattie begins to meet people like his new best friends Ben and Aryeh and Nicole, for whom he developed a severe crush. After they were settled in their bunks, they began the activities. Mattie’s favorite activity was nature. On one of his nature walks with Ben and Aryeh, the instructor, Mary Ann, led them to the old camp which had long since deteriorated. While there, he found an old bag which had a riddle inside which leads to other riddles. Will these riddles lead to something big or are they just riddles?
I liked the writing style because it was funny and just made me smile. Although I thought that the author put a little too much emphasis on Mattie’s crush with Nicole, overall I thought that this was a pretty good book. I liked the riddles in the book so much that I shared them all with my family.
I thought that most of the characters had good development and fit well with the overall plot line. My favorite character was Aryeh. I liked him because he was the diplomat; the one to go to if you had an argument. He fit very well with the rest of the characters.
I would recommend “Summer Sleep-Away” by Ofer Aronskind to people who like adventure and humor. I could not put this book down until I finished it.
