“Fallen Ruler” by Eleanor T. Beaty is the story of sixteen-year-old Lya who had lived a normal life until a chance string of events thrust her into an adventure. When Lya’s father was dragged into a terrible situation with the shady people he worked for, Lya was dragged into a dangerous situation as well. Kidnapped along with her drunk and drug addicted sister, Lya was taken to a secluded location in India to be kept hostage there until her father dealt with the situation he had created. Will Lya and her family escape alive?
Unbeknownst to Lya, she was actually an alien from a different planet sent to Earth to pay penance for her crimes and keep her safe from evil forces. Taken to India as a hostage, Lya had to escape. With the help of three alien protectors, Lya managed to free herself and vowed to return for her sister. After escaping to a nearby monastery, Lya was accidentally whisked off to her home world of Ray. There she learned of her disgraced past and of the dangerous enemies that sought her out. Will Lya be able to escape Ray and save her family?
In the book, it felt like certain challenges the characters faced were solved too easily or dragged on too long. This made parts of the book seem really fast and others painfully slow. The plot wasn’t well developed in the sense that certain significant events were given mere sentences and were not later incorporated into the story. It left off on a bit of a cliffhanger and I’ll be curious to see how the author resolves it in the next book. While this book did have its flaws, it was still a fun read.
I would recommend this book to people who like fantasy books. The book did have some more adult themes, drugs and rape, making it more suitable for adults and teenagers. While it was a bit hard to get through at times, it was still a pretty quick read. This was the first book in a series and I look forward to reading the next one.
